Lord Shiva Pictures

Lord Shiva, also known as Rudra/Mrityunjaya/Tryambaka is one of the three Supreme Gods of Hindu religion. He is the God of Transformation and Power. Of all Popular Hindu deities that are worshipped today, Shiva/Rudra is the one and only deity mentioned in Vedas.

In Rig Veda, Shiva is invoked as powerful archer, storm god and as one who can control and spread diseases among Humans.

In Rig Veda, a Mantra known as Maha Mrityunjaa Mantra is devoted to him. This mantra is addressed to Lord Shiva for warding off untimely death. While its energy protects and guides the initiates a mantra re-links consciousness to its deeper and more abiding nature and repetition of the mantra constitutes Japa, the practice of which develops concentration that leads to a transformation of awareness. Whereas the Gayatri Mantra is meant for purification and spiritual guidance, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is meant for healing rejuvenation and nurturance.

Also Harappa/Mohenjo Daro Excavation provides us fact that Shiva was worshipped since Indus Valley Civilization. He is Praised as Personal God in Ramayana, but becomes a Supreme God in MahaBharatha.
